The weekend of Nov. 1-2, I went to a math conference in Palm Springs. It was fabulous! It was also the last time I was among the living. :)
I got sick. I don't mean the sniffles. I mean on my butt, can't think straight, barely got laundry and dinner done and that's all (and not always that) sick! Hence my recent absence.
While I'm still fighting coughs and sniffles, my energy and brain are starting to return. That means I have a game of catch up to play. I've had to GREATLY ammend my plans, both for life and for blogging.
Here's the updated scoop:
-I'm dropping the 30 cookie reviews in 30 days. Everything works out better this way. If I pick up where I left off I'll be testing recipes too close to Christmas and my whole plan was to have things done ahead...ya.
-I'll just be posting my holiday baking as I do things, which will have more than just cookies. Some recipes will be tried and true family favorites, some will be new and will include a review.
-I'll do a post soon to catch you up to where I am in Project Life. I'm almost caught up, but haven't posted here in a while. That post will likely be a single shot each of several weeks in one post kind of post, rather than a several shots of one week kind of post. You can always ask questions in the comment section if there's something you see that you want clarification on.
-I'm prepping for my December Daily! I am super excited this year! I'm doing it a little bit different this year. The first year I made my album (2010) I did most of it ahead of time and filled in as the month progressed. In 2011 I didn't get it done. :( Last year I put a bunch of supplies togehter to draw from but didn't do anything ahead of time. I really wanted to work more organically last year. This year is a bit of a compromise. I'm prepping some stuff, but in a way that leaves it flexible.
I'm making an 8x8 this year. I am using Stampin' Up!'s divided 8x8 page protectors. These are a super good deal and I think they're on sale right now too. Love them!
For the album I just purchased a chipboard one today. I really wanted a ring album, but all I could find in 8x8 was post bound. Who knew? I've been searching high and low. I'm not a fan of the Stampin' Up! holiday 8x8 so I finally resorted, after searching many craft stores, to getting a chipboard one online. It should be here soon.
-I'll do a post soon about how I'm preparing for December Daily. I've set aside some purchases for paper and embellishments, I've created an "inspiration board", and I've started thinking about what'd going to go into it. I'm not sure how I'm decorating my album yet, but I'm not too worried about it. It's not going to stress me out if the album cover is the last thing to get done.
-I've also, in the past, worked on my album at the end of each week because my craft room is not at my house. This year I've decided to bring my main items here to my house so I can work each night after the kids go to bed. I can't bring my whole craft room, so I still anticipate having to finish off the pages once a week there, but I won't feel behind. I'll be using a lot of sticky notes. :)
-I am still planning on creating a separate blog for The Elementary Professor. That way those of you who visit for teaching ideas only and don't care about my homemaking fun can access just that. :) I was planning on making it a while ago, but alas, I thought it better to wait until I could think straight again.
So that's the update for now. I'll be back soon with happy stuff!

Another set of picture sorting and classifying cards!
This is a set of title cards and food picture cards (with food names on
them) for practicing food classification and learning about nutrition in
general. The cards have real pictures to give students a more accurate
idea of what each food looks like.
25 pages:
-16 title cards (several options for how you want to sort or use them)
-63 food cards including foods for all the food groups and fats/oils as well as unhealthy choices.
There are title cards for: food, nutrition, healthy, unhealthy, beef,
pork, grain, poultry, seafood, junk food, legumes, dairy, protein, meat,
vegetables, fruit
The title cards can be used for bulletin board labeling, pocket chart sorting/classifying, or center work.
There are 63 food picture cards that can be used for the same ideas, and
one blank card so you can have a template to add any extra cards you
want to create. There are two different "produce" cards so you can also
use whichever you like.
I recommend laminating the title cards and animal cards for durability.
Head on over to my TPT store and download these up for only $2!!!

vocabulary. The cards have real pictures to give students a more
accurate idea of what each vehicle or item looks like.

-6 picture cards
There are title cards for: vehicle, transportation, air, water, land, ride, walk, fly, drive, road, sidewalk, how we move

This book is by far one of my FAVORITE books to read with my students. I've been doing these great activities for years, so I decided to put all of my work into a study guide unit. I had no idea it would be 115 pages!!!
There are lesson plans, projects, tests, rubrics, activities, etc...
I'm not really a huge fan of worksheets. I've never felt like they take enough thinking, so I tend to do things like travel brochures and pop up settings, etc...
Here are the important things to know about this unit:
It has so much in it!!!!
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is a complete 115 page, 3 week
novel study guide. The guide is presented in natural chapter clusters
and includes instruction and/or practice, as well as necessary digital
materials, for:
Vocabulary development and practice (including cloze and a crossword)
A coordinating Science demonstration
Comprehension questions to use during reading
Questioning strategies
Literature circle cards – numbered by lesson to help you keep them organized for future use
Student work folders
Bulletin board suggestion and picture
Summarizing
Making predictions
Synonym and antonym usage (within vocabulary practice)
Grammar lesson for quotation marks
3 week unit planner
Pictures of student samples
Lesson plans
Brochure planner and rubric
Pop up setting
Character comparison writing
Step book with story elements
Book/movie comparison page
Characterization
Mini adjective lesson
Music incorporation suggestions
Recipe for Turkish Delight
Unit test and vocabulary test with answer key
Appendices for homeschooling adaptation, Christian school adaptation, and depth and complexity inclusion.
The novel study includes everything needed to teach the novel and
activities also fit common core standards for several grade levels.

You can purchase this unit here in my Teachers Pay Teachers store or here in my Teachers Notebook store.
Go get it now and get started today!!!

As much as I hate doing things like flashcards and worksheets and rote stuff, it just has to be done for multiplication. There a great ways to teach it and practice it, but the amount of speed that needs to be developed to make that memorization useful in later years requires some drill style practice.
I do still try to make it as fun as possible though. :)
I actually came up with this idea when I was working on the upper grade spelling unit I posted last week. My mind started running (as it often does) and I realized that I could use this hidden answer thing with almost anything!
Here's the idea...the problem is on the outside, the answer inside. Kids could question eachother or work alone.
At first I was thinking they could read the problem, say the answer, then pull out the answer to self check. Sounds good right?
Then I thought, "I could totally differentiate with this!"
Kids who are having problems with only certain facts can practice just those. Like 9x6 and 4x8.
Kids who are having problems with only certain tables, like the 4's for example, could just practice those.
Kids who need a bit more of a challenge? Take all the sticks out and put them and the pockets in serparate containers. They have to put them all back together!
It could be a math center, or have kids keep their own differentiated set in their desks for practice time, or you could send home a whole set with each kid!
The product I uploaded to my store has all the facts from 0x0 to 12x12 in half sheet sizes!
They are white in the file so you can print them without using up all your colored ink. In the cute pics above I printed them right onto cute paper!
Go get 'em now in my Teachers Pay Teachers store (which by the way, is still on sale 28% off through today!) And remember to use code BTS13 at checkout!

Before I get to today's spelling topic, I should let you know I have sale August 18th and 19th in my Teachers Pay Teachers Store. 28% off!
Did you know that the average person needs to encounter a word 7 times in order for it to become natural for them to recognize and use?
Both vocabulary and spelling practice come into play with that data.
But how do you practice spelling? Write it 7 times? No! Please no! It has to be spaced repititions. That means 7 separate instances of encountering the word.
Kids these days do a lot of copying words over and over again. Really? There's no better way?
Yes there is! Move with those words! Make art with those words! Make noise with those words! Think with those words! Categorize those words!
But whatever you do, please don't subject children to hours of writing the same word over and over again!
Need ideas? I have an upper grade and a primary book in my shop! Ideas, printables, activity choices galore!
The k-3 pack is here: Super Spelling Activities for Primary Grades
The 3-6 pack is here: Super Spelling Practice for Upper Grades

I just added these to my shop for only $2!!!
These are titled by subject, with one blank included, so you can turn them into dry erase boards and change them daily! There's also a title block (Today's Objectives) that can be put up so you can mount these in a cluster around the title.
Hello cheap dollar store frame....
Just frame it and use dry erase markers or Vis a Vis on it and you can wipe and change!
Not into framing? How about a plastic page protector and some pretty ribbon?
Or print the 2-per-page size so they fit in a 5x7 frame to put at centers or work stations!
Available in my Teachers Pay Teachers store
or in my Teacher's Notebook store.
Here are the features:
Who needs an objective poster for every single standard? You can turn
these into dry erase boards to use whole class or at centers/stations
with simple cheap frames or page protector sleeves!
These are blank except for the subject title at the top. One blank
slide is included in case you want to add your own subject or title to
it.
10 pages
Write your common core daily objectives on them
The pretitled pages are:
Reading
Writing
Math
Science
Social Studies
Language Arts
Today's Objectives
3 photo samples of different ways to display.
For centers or stations and whole class. I like them clustered at the
white board in my focus area around the "Today's Objectives" sheet.
