Have you seen the fabulous wrinkle ribbon stuff floating around? I love it! And it's so easy to make! Why would you want to make it you ask? Well, It's easy to make out of the seam binding ribbon in our mini catalog, so you could order one spool of ribbon and get both types! Also, you can make it in any color to match any project!
Here's some wrinkle ribbon in chocolate chip:
I love the antique feel to it. It' so interesting. I made this set to be kind of varied. You can make it as varied or as consistent in color as you want.
Now, I have to tell you I've been looking up a lot of ways people do this, and I'm just finding a lot of unnecessary steps. So if you've seen other tutorials and you're thinking I've missed some things, I haven't. I've just streamlined it and taken out some parts that seemed unnecessary to me.
Before I get started, just want you to know this tutorial is designed to show you how to dye and wrinkle your own ribbon. Because of that, I'm starting with vanilla seam binding. However, we also carry cherry cobbler and artichoke seam binding. To wrinkle those, just wet and wrinkle, let dry. That's it!
Here goes!
Wet your vanilla seam binding.
Put it in a dish that will wash dye out easily and drip re-inker directly onto it. The more dye you put on it the more saturated your color will be. Less dye = lighter color. Re-inkers are only $2.95 each so it's easy to have access to a ton of colors!
Smoosh it around to get it all over the ribbon. A word about plastic gloves here. You might want to use them. Obviously I'm not using them in the picture. A lot of the dye will come off with a soap and water wash, the rest takes about 24-48 hours to wear totally off. I didn't care because I'm never going anywhere exciting. :)
The process of squishing the wet ribbon and ink is what makes it wrinkle. So now you just lay it out on paper towel, leaving the wrinklies in it, and let it dry. I like to put a sheet of wax paper under the paper towel so that it protects the surface underneath if the ink bleeds all the way through. It takes a little over an hour to dry.
Optional: you could also add smooch spritz while it's wet and make a shimmery ribbon!
